Johnny Winter – Live Bootleg Series, Vol. 5 (2009)

Release Date: June 30, 2009
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
Label: Friday Music
USA

The keyword in this Johnny Winter archival series is « bootleg. » This fifth volume feels more like a bottom-of-the-barrel scrape than anything that flatters or enhances Winter’s reputation as an electric blues innovator. The material is from the late ’80s or early ’90s except for « Talk Is Cheap, » which he cut early on. The sound quality is pure audience with limited fidelity — you can hear the man’s guitar and you can hear a bassline, and that’s about it — and his singing, when you can behold it clearly, is atrociously bad.

Line up:

Johnny Winter: guitar, vocals,
Jon Paris: bass,
Booby T: drums.

The Derek Trucks Band-Songlines (2006)

Release Date: February 21, 2006
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Southern Blues
Label: Columbia, Legacy
USA

This is the sixth studio album by Derek Trucks and, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 — apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. This album’s title, Songlines, was inspired by the late author Bruce Chatwin’s description of aboriginal creation myths. This album was not recorded trying to capture a live performance in the confines of a studio. There are no tracks here that give way to loose jamming; these are songs. In fact, it was carefully crafted and executed. But the rawness, the energy, and the unpredictable musicality are everywhere present. (Thom Jurek, All Music)

Line up:

Derek Trucks – guitars, dobro
Yonrico Scott – drums, percussion, backing vocals
Todd Smallie – bass, vocal
Kofi Burbridge – Organ, piano, clavinet, flute, backing vocals
Mike Mattison – lead vocalist
Count M’Butu – percussion, vocals

Spoonful Of Blues – Howlin’ Screamin’ And Cryin’ (2017)

Release Date: February 24, 2017
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
Label: Bluestown Records
Norway (Notodden)

The Norwegian blues rebels, Spoonful of Blues, are by far the most rocking, rawboned and innovative Blues band in Norway today. The band’s music is deeply rooted in the hard hitting, hypnotizing grooves and rhythms of the Mississippi hill country, combined with the best of classic rock and deep blues. Many have called Spoonful of Blues the black sheep of the family when it comes to the blues in Norway. This might be a good description; these guys are seeking the raw deepness in blues and rock instead of the sophistication and smoothness you find in the American west coast blues.

Label: Provogue
USA (Greensboro, NC)

Eric Gales grew up in a musical family with four brothers, two of them who learned to play the guitar upside down and left handed in the same fashion that Eric does.Through the years, it would not be unusual to look out in the audience and see artists like Carlos Santana, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, B. B. King, and Eric Clapton, looking on with interest. As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix but Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Eric Johnson.Middle of the Road is a huge step forward in both contemporary blues and soul.
