The Mustangs – Rocking Horse (2010)

Release Date:2010

The Mustangs are a British blues rock band that was formed in Hampshire in 2001. They are unusual on the blues rock circuit as their albums are made of entirely original material. The Mustangs were nominated for Best Band at the 2010 British Blues Awards. As well as their own material, in concert the group often plays some blues standards, though radically reinterpreting the arrangement to suit the band’s « truly storming… ferocious » sound.Chiefly influenced by the British blues rock bands of the 1960s, such as Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac, as well as Dr. Feelgood, the Mustangs also draw on more traditional blues influences such as Muddy Waters, Elmore James and Robert Johnson. The band’s use of blues harp, played by Derek Kingaby, adds to an authentic, traditional blues sound. « Rocking Horse » is the second album of the band.

The Marshall Tucker Band – The Marshall Tucker Band (1973)

Release Date: April 1973
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Country Rock
Label: Capricorn
USA (Spartanburg, South Carolina)

Taking a page from their Capricorn Records labelmates and Southern rock contemporaries the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band issued a self-titled debut blending the long and winding psychedelic and jam band scene with an equally languid and otherwise laid-back country-rock flavor. Their free-spirited brand of Southern rock was a direct contrast to the badass rebel image projected by the Outlaws or Lynyrd Skynyrd. This difference is reflected throughout this 1973 long-player.

Toy Caldwell: lead guitar, steel guitar, lead vocals on « Can’t You See, » « Hillbilly Band, » and « AB’s Song »

Johnny Winter – Live Bootleg Series, Vol. 5 (2009)

Release Date: June 30, 2009
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
Label: Friday Music
USA

The keyword in this Johnny Winter archival series is « bootleg. » This fifth volume feels more like a bottom-of-the-barrel scrape than anything that flatters or enhances Winter’s reputation as an electric blues innovator. The material is from the late ’80s or early ’90s except for « Talk Is Cheap, » which he cut early on. The sound quality is pure audience with limited fidelity — you can hear the man’s guitar and you can hear a bassline, and that’s about it — and his singing, when you can behold it clearly, is atrociously bad.

Line up:

Johnny Winter: guitar, vocals,
Jon Paris: bass,
Booby T: drums.

The Derek Trucks Band-Songlines (2006)

Release Date: February 21, 2006
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Southern Blues
Label: Columbia, Legacy
USA

This is the sixth studio album by Derek Trucks and, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 — apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. This album’s title, Songlines, was inspired by the late author Bruce Chatwin’s description of aboriginal creation myths. This album was not recorded trying to capture a live performance in the confines of a studio. There are no tracks here that give way to loose jamming; these are songs. In fact, it was carefully crafted and executed. But the rawness, the energy, and the unpredictable musicality are everywhere present. (Thom Jurek, All Music)

Derek Trucks – guitars, dobro
Yonrico Scott – drums, percussion, backing vocals
