USA FlagRelease Year: 1971
Genre: Blues, Country, Southern Rock
Label: Paramount Records
USA

American country rock band founded in 1967. Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen formed in 1967 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with George Frayne taking the stage name Commander Cody. After playing for several years in local bars, the core members migrated to San Francisco, soon getting a recording contract with Paramount Records. The group released their first album in late 1971, Lost in the Ozone, which yielded its best-known hit, a cover version of the 1955 song Hot Rod Lincoln, which reached the top ten on the Billboard singles chart in early 1972.Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen were equally adept at stripped-down basic rock & roll, R&B, and gritty country-rock. Commander Cody’s country-rock rocked harder than the Eagles or Poco — essentially, the group was a bar band. Much like English pub rock bands like Brinsley Schwarz and Ducks Deluxe, Commander Cody resisted the overblown and bombastic trends of early-’70s rock, preferring a basic no-frills approach.

Line up:

George Frayne (Commander Cody) – piano, vocals on « Hot Rod Lincoln »
John Tichy – rhythm guitar, harmony vocals, lead vocals on « Family Bible » and « Beat Me Daddy »
Andy Stein – fiddle, saxophone
Lance Dickerson – drums
Bruce Barlow – Fender bass, acoustic bass on « Midnight Shift », harmony vocals
Bill Kirchen – lead guitar, trombone, harmony vocals, lead vocals on « Seeds and Stems » and « Home in My Hand »
Billy C. Farlow – lead vocals, harmonica

The Roadhouse Dogs emerged in the middle 2000’s playing a style of music all but lost to the mainstream contemporary British music scene. Guitar driven blues and country inspired, just like the Rolling Stones before them, by the greats of American roots music. Here are echoes of everyone from Robert Johnson, through Woody Guthrie to Gram Parsons, Bruce Springsteen and beyond. If that sounds like too big a boast, then take a listen…. This is a set of original, thoughtful songs played with a London swagger while paying respectful homage to the country and the artists that initiated rock and roll. »29 Palms to Pimlico » brings Americana from one small town in California to another in the heart of London UK.

Kane and his power trio band explore music that literally morphs from roadhouse boogie to cream dream jazz to soul searing blues and the kind of ass kickin’ country lickin’ that harkens back to the great unsung axe slingers of old.Born in Weirton WV, Duffy Kane was surrounded by the sounds of Jazz, Classical, Blues and Country.Duffy Kane is an American country blues-rock boogie rebel who plays a mean guitar, howls up a sandstorm and writes a helluva insightful lyric. He’s a thinkin’ man’s ax slinger with a lot of fret board facility and even more on his mind. After transferring years of classical violin studies into self taught guitar wizardry, the Weirton, West Virginia-native came up aping hard rockin’ yahoos like Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath.

If you aren’t familiar with Jeff, he is a native of Lamesa, Texas, near Lubbock where he grew up on a diet of edgy country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. He eventually moved in the 80’s to Austin and played a variety of genres in a variety of bands. Frustrated with the « music business » Jeff pursued a « real job » with the hope of returning to music. He was actually a successful trial lawyer in Texas for 10 years before deciding to return to music in 2000. (We lose one lawyer and gain back a great musician all at once- that’s a good day!!) He moved to Durango, Colorado to gain musical inspiration. This must have worked as Jeff delivers a killer live performance that you do not want to miss.

One of the best albums of country blues ever recorded. The fingerpicking is delicate, the vocals mellow and sweet. Many tunes that remain associated with Hurt are included here in versions that rival his legendary recordings from the late ’20s. « Richland Woman Blues, » « Stagolee, » « The Chicken, » and « Since I’ve Laid My Burden Down » sound as fresh as ever in these ’60s versions. This album leaves little doubt as to why Hurt was so beloved after his rediscovery.

Blues From Maxwell Street 1960 – 65

Release Date: 08/01/2013
Genre: Blues/Country Blues
Label: Document

Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market was once a hive of mercantile activity from the 1870s until it finally closed and fell silent in 1994. Like Beale Street in Memphis, this was also a home and a birth place for the blues. From Papa Charlie Jackson to Robert Nighthawk, Arvella Gray to John Wrencher, Maxwell Street played host to some of the best and greatest blues musicians and served as a working example where could be found one of the most iconic figures of the blues; the street musician. For many of them, such as Charley Jackson from New Orleans, Arvella Gray from Texas, Maxwell Street was a landing place for the many musicians who migrated from the South to Chicago, bringing with them their music and songs and making them part of the Chicago blues landscape. In the summer of 1960 blues researchers and historians; Paul Oliver, John Steiner Bjorn Englund and Donald R. Hill took their notebooks and recording equipment to what was then a typical Sunday at the bustling and vibrant Maxwell Street Market.

The Bloody Jug Band – Coffin Up Blood

Original Release Date: 31/03/2012
Label: The Bloody JUG Band
Genre: Alternative Country/Folk Rock

The Bloody Jug Band is a horror/country/bluegrass jug band whose music may best be described as “swamp-noir.”The Bloody Jug Band are a tight, feisty group of musicians who prove, without a doubt, that their country-roots-laced love of horror is no mere gimmick. Elements of both the country and the creepy are skillfully on display; dark thematic elements are the fuel that drives the music and lyrics, but these elements never weigh down the proceedings (or let the album become more about the aesthetics than the music). I have to say that, personally, when I realized that a) there was an actual jug involved, and b) there was also a washboard, I was beyond stoked. I love kick-ass country music – and this is about as kick-ass as things get.

Line up:

Cragmire Peace: vocals/washboard,
Stormy Jean: vocals/percussion,
Randall Scandal: mandolin,
Bloody Rick Lane: harmonica,
Brian Shredder: guitar,
Seth Funky: washtub bass,
Big Daddy Jerm: jug.

Little Joe Ayers- Backatchya

Release: 18/10/2011
Genre: North Mississippi Hill Country Blues
Product Label: Devil Down Records

Holly Springs, Mississippi’s Little Joe Ayers was a longtime member of Junior Kimbrough’s Soul Blues Boys and is featured playing bass behind Kimbrough on the 1988 recordings made by David Evans that were first released on HMG/Hightone in 1997 and in Robert Palmer’s 1991 film Deep Blues.Since Kimbrough’s death in 1998, Ayers has kept up with his music while working at a local school and running his own bulldozer business. This new release on Reed Turchi’s Chapel Hill–based Devil Down imprint was recorded on fellow bluesman Kenny Brown’s front porch and finds Ayers singing and accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. He effectively evokes Kimbrough’s stark, hypnotic style on such selections as Don’t Leave Me Baby, I’m Sorry and Anywhere I Go as well as covering his mentor’s Do the Romp and Keep Your Hands off Her. Covers of Howlin’ Wolf’s I Asked for Water and 44 fit the program nicely, as do Ayers’ interpretations of Muddy Waters on Two Trains Running, John Lee Hooker on Got My Eyes on You and Junior Parker on Feel Alright.Ayers is still young enough—he was born in Lamar, Mississippi in 1944—to be a powerful performer, making this is one of those releases that begs the question why it took so long for someone to make his first recording. Let’s hope it won’t be his last. (Living Blues)

This is the real thing: The genuine kind of back-porch-country blues that reverberated round the hill country in the fifties and sixties.
