In the Beginning is the second live album by Stevie (Ray) Vaughan and Double Trouble (the stage name at that time did not include Vaughan’s middle name). While the album was released about two years after Vaughan’s death in 1990, the actual performance took place on April 1, 1980 at Steamboat 1874 in Austin, Texas. This live broadcast captures a young Stevie Vaughan (he had yet to become Stevie Ray) blasting the hometown crowd with a style that was already very well-formed. Taken from the surviving two-track master, Vaughan’s guitar is raw and in your face every note of the way. Fans of this mercurial guitarist will want to add this one to the collection.

This 1997 release by Too Slim & the Taildraggers is chock-full of the wide-ranging spectrum of blues in its plethora of styles as done by this fun group in their own inimitable fashion. The thing that always seems to come through on this group’s discs is their love of playing. This band is rooted in the blues, but they are not confined to any one style of playing, and the wide-roaming influences of non-commercial radio expose wider and wider varieties of music which burst out all over this disc. This is a great group to put on and watch the miles float by on the highway, as there is always some mighty good playing and energy to keep you going. This is a great group to put on and watch the miles float by on the highway, as there is always some mighty good playing and energy to keep you going.

Jimmy Burns, Born in 1943 near the Delta town of Dublin, Mississippi, embodies that increasingly rare combination of blues roots deep enough to tap into ‘the real thing’, while still possessing the youth and vitality to present his music with plenty of life and real excitement. He honed his vocal skills singing with vocal groups in the ’50s, and over the years has perfected an appeallingly melodic, vocal-inflected contemorar guitar style to complement the down-home picking he’d learned in his youth. In the studio Jimmy and his regular band played off one another with a musical empathy that comes only from countless nights of proving themselves on the bandstand. With Leaving Here Walking, Jimmy pays tribute to his earliest musicla inspirations, revisits the era of classic R&B, and presents well-crafted originals covering all the facets of his long and varied life in music.

Tedeschi’s music naturally gives itself to a live setting. The program is a good one; featuring her regular band, this set juxtaposes a nice collection of material that has appeared on her studio albums, performed with a wonderful balance of passion and finesse that free-ranges across R&B, blues, and funk. Tedeschi’s gifts as a singer are considerable. This is a fine Tedeschi artifact; it doesn’t replace her studio outings in any way, but it complements them nicely.

Jimmy Burns – It Ain’t Right (2015)

téléchargement

USA FlagRelease Date: August 21, 2015
Genre: Blues, Modern Electric Blues, Contemporary Blue, Soul Blues.
Label: Delmark
USA

18f7930fad60fbdb8a8200d3f35d8a3c

Singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Jimmy Burns is a contemporary bluesman who combines his Delta roots with R&B and soul to come up with a sound uniquely his own. Burns is a charismatic performer with an expressive, soulful, voice and a melodic guitar style to match. « It Ain’t Right » is Jimmy Burns’ first studio set in a long time – 12 years, to be precise, a belated sequel to 2003’s Back to the Delta. « It Ain’t Right » doesn’t make any pretenses about returning to Burns’ Mississippi roots but rather settles into a wonderfully textured soulful groove, something relaxed and elastic, a sound that gives plenty of space to both his clean, hopping guitar and robust vocals.

Line up:

Jimmy Burns – vocal, guitar
Anthony Palmer – guitar
Greg McDaniel – bass
Bryant « T » Parker – drums
Sumito « Ariyo » Ariyoshi – piano
Roosevelt Purifoy – organ
Marques Carroll – trumpet
Chris Neal – tenor sax
