The first volume of the Mbirafon “Blues At Home” Collection, this CD features one of the most intense voices of the blues, Van Zula Carter Hunt. This central figure in the Memphis blues scene was born in 1901 in Somerville, Tennessee, but spent her whole life in Memphis. She started singing and playing at age five, performing with her brother and cousins in a group called Somerville Family Band.
Mose Vinson was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, in 1917. He learned how to play the piano at the age of five from his mother, who played the organ at church. His father, also a musician and a piano player, taught him his first musical elements and some early blues. Vinson started playing in public in 1932 around the age of 15 and was spotted for his talent by some white managers in 1936. He studied and learned to read music, and joined a band in Nashville for six years. He recalled leaving Holly Springs at an early age and traveling in the areas of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, reaching Memphis in 1945, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Van Hunt’s daughter Sweet Charlene Peeples was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1936. She received her musical training mainly in church vocal groups and during the late 1940s and 1950s in local nightclubs. She performed professionally on several Memphis stages. A very reserved person, Charlene stopped her musical activities during the early 1970s.This CD features four examples of Van Hunt on vocal and guitar, and various tracks accompanied by Mose Vinson’s piano. There are also blues and boogie solos by Mose Vinson plus four pieces sung by Sweet Charlene with his piano accompaniment.

Born in Memphis, raised in Forrest City, Arkansas, Memphis has always been home. As a teenager, he walked in American Studios with his guitar and
told them he was a songwriter. Words of encouragement were given and he kept pursuing a singer/songwriter career. Spending time gigging in and
around the Memphis area as a solo artist, with bands and working in studios to learn the craft of recording.Realizing that California was not
where he needed to be, Danny moved to the Mississippi Delta and learned the blues by playing with Big Jack Johnson in the early 80’s. Moving back
to Memphis he earned a living gigging and writing, singing and producing commercial jingles as well as being a studio background singer and
guitarist for other artists.

Preston Shannon is one of the driving forces in today’s blues scene in Memphis. BB King, Rufus Thomas, Ann Peebles, Al Green and of course also the Sun Studios kind of indicate the importance of Memphis as a fantastic source for the best blues an soul. And Preston (a regular in BB King’s on Beale Street) delivers it all with his powerful voice and his inventive guitar playing. The first 7 songs on Dust My Broom were recorded in Memphis, paying tribute to Elmore James with guest slide players Kirk Smitheart and Michael Aarons. The last 5 songs were recorded with Dutch top band Fat Harry and the Fuzzy Licks for Radio Rijnmond, Rotterdam.

This is the Old Memphis Kings first album and it has a Mississippi blues feel with southern charm. The Old Memphis Kings,a Mississippi blues band, was formed about 7 yearsago by the chance meeting of Drew Blackwell, Caleb Childs, and a blues legend named Willie King. After the tragic loss of Willie King in 2009,The Old Memphis Kings got a sudden jolt with the addition of adrummer, Beth Fulgham. Changing them from an acoustic duo to an electrified power trio. Then in late 2011, Keatzi Gunmoney (local musican and friend of the band) joined the group on bass adding his chunky blues tone that has helped fill out the sound. Now, with their new found sound, the Kings are playing wherever people will
have them. Urging crowds to loosen up,feel the music, and knock it down!!

July 1963 Library of Congress recordings (some were previously issued on Flyright and Heritage LPs)

This was produced in France. The sound quality is perfect and it is the best quality studio recording I have heard of John. It is actually the Library of Congress sessions taped in 1963. This was only the second time John had performed professionally, the first being in the 1928 sessions, listed below on Yazoo Records. John was 70 years old at the time and died only 3 years after these recordings were made. Present during the recordings was Dick Spottswood who along with Tom Hoskins rediscovered John in 1963. This is very difficult to find at this time. This is an absolute must so if you are unable to find it e-mail me below for suggestion sources. (Do not confuse this with the CD of the same title produced by Rounder records in 1991).
