Founded by Lowell George and Bill Payne in L.A. during 1969; they produced a series of highly original albums over the next decade featuring an eclectic blend of rock n roll, blues, country, folk, soul and jazz before the death of Lowell George in 1979 brought the first phase of the band existence to an end.

« Fire On The Floor » is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there’s a theme that ties these twelve songs together, it’s a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. These twelve new songs run the gamut of genre, reflecting Beth’s eclectic teenage influences, which took in everything from gospel, soul and classical to the seismic rock of Soundgarden.

Tedeschi’s music naturally gives itself to a live setting. The program is a good one; featuring her regular band, this set juxtaposes a nice collection of material that has appeared on her studio albums, performed with a wonderful balance of passion and finesse that free-ranges across R&B, blues, and funk. Tedeschi’s gifts as a singer are considerable. This is a fine Tedeschi artifact; it doesn’t replace her studio outings in any way, but it complements them nicely.

Jimmy Burns presents the complete package of commercially appealing, blues-faithful tunes, mostly self-written. His guitar playing is economical but not sparse, tinged with excitable phrases but never over the top, the perfect cool, burning balance.Burns also has a fine band whose taste and supportive nature is the perfect foil for the leader. This is a bluesman who has a style all his own, free of clichés and influences, with a controlled feeling for the blues that bubbles over when called upon. He could be the premier blues exponent of today, one who the public better be paying close attention to.

Modern blues fans shouldn’t be turned off by the title of Jimmy Burns’ third Delmark release, Back to the Delta. The electric guitar slung over Burns’ back on the cover should be a definite tip-off that this is not a recreation of authentic Delta blues. Burns, who is from the Delta, took his inspiration for this session from blues guitar forefathers of the territory, alongside modern pioneers Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and John Lee Hooker.

Jimmy Burns: vocals, guitar,

Singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Jimmy Burns is a contemporary bluesman who combines his Delta roots with R&B and soul to come up with a sound uniquely his own. Burns is a charismatic performer with an expressive, soulful, voice and a melodic guitar style to match. « It Ain’t Right » is Jimmy Burns’ first studio set in a long time – 12 years, to be precise, a belated sequel to 2003’s Back to the Delta. « It Ain’t Right » doesn’t make any pretenses about returning to Burns’ Mississippi roots but rather settles into a wonderfully textured soulful groove, something relaxed and elastic, a sound that gives plenty of space to both his clean, hopping guitar and robust vocals.

Jimmy Burns – vocal, guitar

Amanda Pearcy’s music is rooted in her hardscrabble history, authentically grounded in her earthy, soulful voice. Testifying to her southeast Texas upbringing, Pearcy’s songs carry a sense, and the sensuality, of the South, weaving themes of home and its loss; love, both surrendered to, and longed for; and our human experience’s collective memory. Most of the songs on An Offering were written during a transitory year and a half after the success of Royal Street. Living on the cusp of homelessness, Pearcy cared for travelers’ homes in exchange for a temporary roof over her head, while a beloved family member was incarcerated in the oldest prison in Texas.

The power and honesty of his unmistakable voice, combined with the meaningful lyric content of his songs, powerful grooves, and clever arrangements, authenticates Gaar’s unique brand of Louisiana blues. Burton Gaar was born on Halloween day in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He grew up from humble beginnings in a farming community in Rapides Parish, LA. Gaar says, « My father was a hard working dairyman and enlisted me to work just as I was big enough to lift a bucket of hog slop, around age 7. » As a small child, Gaar was exposed to Gospel music at local African American churches. Lisa Mills has remained one of the Gulf Coast’s brightest musical stars. Mills has taken her soulful blues sounds worldwide and has shared the stage and/or studio with artists such as Robert Plant, Jeff Beck, Andy Fairweather Low, Junior Wells and Dr. John. The singer-songwriter has now taken on a new project that has roots in the past. Recently, Mills decided to “reclaim” her debut album “I’m Changing,” which she sees as an unfinished album. Mills cites a variety of reasons for going back to her debut. She received much encouragement from constant requests for copies of the out-of-print album. A group of friendly investors also felt the need for Mills to revisit “I’m Changing.” Ultimately, undeniable fate became the biggest factor in this project.

After traveling for six months in Europe with his mother Eve and step-father John Muir (« How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive » circ. 1969), the folks shipped Craig off to attend boarding school in England where he took up the guitar and started playing the blues. The Craig Caffall Band returns with their latest effort Got it Covered!. Got it Covered is powerful set of cover songs. Craig shows that he has got what it takes to take on some of the most famous cover songs of all time and make them truly his own. This cd is guaranteed to rock your socks off.

Super Session album for sale by Mike Bloomfield / Al Kooper / Mike Bloomfield / Stephen Stills was released Apr 08, 2003 on the Sony Music label. A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time–nobody makes records like this any more. Super Session is an album conceived by Al Kooper and featuring the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Bloomfield and Stills do not play together on the album, with tracks including Bloomfield on side one, and those including Stills on side two. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a gold record by the RIAA.

Line up:

Al Kooper – Guitar [Electric], Guitar [12-string], Organ, Ondioline, Piano, Vocals
Mike Bloomfield – Guitar [Electric] (tracks: 1 to 5)
Stephen Stills – Guitar [Electric] (tracks: 6 to 9)
Harvey Brooks – Bass
Eddie Hoh – Drums
Barry Goldberg – Electric Piano (tracks: 1, 2)

Kit Holmes is that welcome curiosity, a young composer and singer-songwriter with all the makings of a new British guitar heroine and a style that skips cheerfully across boundaries. She mostly plays acoustic guitar but she’s certainly no folk singer; her songs are far too pop-influenced.Impressive, and she’ll baffle those in the music industry who like everything to fit into neat, marketable categories.

Line up:

Kit Holmes: vocals, guitar,
Allan Greenwood: guitar and keys,
Sam Vicary: double-bass
Pat Illingworth: drums

Shuggie Otis – Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues (1994)

Shuggie Otis - Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues (1994)

Genre: Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Soul
Label: Epic/Legacy

Culled from four albums, except for one previously unreleased track, Shuggie’s Boogie: Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues is a tour de force made all the more remarkable because the prodigy who produced it was so young. In fact, Shuggie Otis recalls during a boyish spoken intro in « Shuggie’s Boogie » how he used to wear dark glasses and paint on a mustache to look older than his 14 or 15 years when he played in bars in the band of his legendary father Johnny Otis. During the same intro he effortlessly throws off guitar impersonations of T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Elmore James. This compilation has a few rousing, up-tempo numbers, but the highlights are the slow, soulful tunes. One unfortunate omission is the seven-minute « Oxford Gray » from his 1970 album Here Comes Shuggie Otis.
