Janis Joplin’s solo debut was a letdown at the time of release, suffering in comparison with Big Brother’s Cheap Thrills from the previous year, and shifting her style toward soul-rock in a way that disappointed some fans. Removed from that context, it sounds better today, though it’s still flawed. Fronting the short-lived Kozmic Blues Band, the arrangements are horn heavy and the material soulful and bluesy. The band sounds a little stiff, though, and although Joplin’s singing is good, she would sound more electrifying on various live versions of some of the songs that have come out over the years. Also, Mike Bloomfield takes guitar on Maybe, One Good Man and Work Me Lord Here, there is blues, soul, rock, pop, and jazz, plus some old-fashioned 50’s R&B.

2010 three CD set that contains their first five albums for Liberty Records (1968-72) plus bonus tracks. With a career that spans an impressive five decades, the Groundhogs are a veritable British Blues-Rock institution. With a line-up cemented around Peter Cruickshank on bass guitar, Ken Pustelnik on drums and fronted by singer, guitarist and principle songwriter Tony (T.S.) McPhee, this bluesy power trio were joined by harmonica toting Steve Rye for their full length debut, Scratching The Surface released on Liberty Records in 1968. With a reputation hard won by their incessant touring schedule, the band recorded Blues Obituary as a three piece in 1969, followed by Thanks Christ For The Bomb (1970), then hitting #5 with their most successful record, Split, in 1971 and rounded off by the fabulously titled Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs (1972).

Jimi Hendrix’s headlining appearance at the Atlanta Pop Festival would be the largest U.S. audience he would ever play to.The trio of Jimi, Mitch, and Billy Cox had been touring for about two and a half months solid when July 4 rolled around, and they sound really tight kicking off the show. The music on Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival has been available in collector’s circles for some time, but it has never sounded better than it does here. Despite a brief lull mid-set, the revamped Experience turned in an exciting show on July 4, 1970, and with « Hear My Train A Comin’, » Jimi turned in one of the greatest solos of his career.

Blues is a posthumous compilation album by Jimi Hendrix. The album contains eleven blues songs recorded by Hendrix between 1966 and 1970. Out of these eleven, six were previously unreleased. The tracks include seven of Hendrix’s compositions along with covers of famous blues songs such as « Born Under a Bad Sign » and « Mannish Boy ». Most of the album’s material consists of leftover studio tapes that Hendrix might have never intended to release. This collection was re-released again in October 2010 as part of the Hendrix family’s project to remaster Jimi’s discography. This CD contains 11 blues originals and covers, eight of which were previously unreleased. Recorded between 1966 and 1970, they feature the master guitarist stretching the boundaries of electric blues in both live and studio settings. Besides several Hendrix blues-based originals, it includes covers of Albert King and Muddy Waters classics, as well as a 1967 acoustic version of his composition « Hear My Train a Comin’.

Top Drawer hailed from the rural center of the United States, coming right out of Kentucky. There aren’t many facts to be said about the band, considering they were around back in 1969-1970 and they only have one album. Their one and only album, titled “Solid Oak”, was recorded back in 1969 at Fultz Recording Studio over in Kentucky, and if you have one of these original records in mint condition, it could sell for well over a hundred dollars. The album is constantly being sought out due to it’s rarity.

Line-up:

John Baker (lead guitar, harmony)
Ron Linn (organ, harpsichord, harmony, rythm guitar)
Ray Herr (percussion, harmony)

Buffalo Killers – Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.

Original Release Date: 07/08/2012
Blues Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Label: Alive Natural Sound

Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. is a heady synthesis of not only their own previous efforts, but also the many unique styles of music cultivated on American soil over the last five decades. From late ’60s psychedelia, blues, Americana, garage rock and the folk rock sounds that rolled out of Laurel Canyon in the early ’70s. An intoxicating album that sounds as timeless as it does remarkably fresh and quite unlike anything else being released today.
