The Yardbirds’ performance at Stockholm’s Concert Hall in Sweden, on 4 April 1967 took place after many months of touring, during which the Yardbirds had been to the United States twice and as far away as Australia and New Zealand. March of 1967 found them briefly back home again, however, in Sweden the band (now a foursome featuring Jimmy Page on guitar) did little in the way of promoting it, preferring to stick mainly to crowd pleasers like “Heart Full Of Soul”, “Shapes Of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down”. This is a high quality soundboard recording that originally aired on Swedish radio.

Live Bootleg Series Vol. 2 features Winter’s take on songs by legends like B.B. King, Mose Allison, Jimi Hendrix, and Robert Johnson as well as a song by obscure bluesman Willie Brown, and a lone Winter original. This second volume in Johnny Winter’s self-produced Live Bootleg Series is in many ways superior to the first. The reason is simple: Winter relies far more on his electrifying (sometimes just unbelievable) guitar-slinging interpretation of the blues as it meets hard rock more than re-interpreting rock tunes for the blues.Johnny Winter’s blues have always run deep. This disc is proof.

Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar),

Bobby T. (drums)
Jon Paris (harmonica).

Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble – Live Alive (1986)

stevie-ray-vaughan-and-double-trouble-live-alive-1986

USA FlagRelease Date: February 3, 1987
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Rock’n’Roll
Label: Epic/CBS
USA

18f7930fad60fbdb8a8200d3f35d8a3c

« Live Alive » is a magnificent double-length showcase for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar playing, featuring a number of extended jams on a selection of most of the best material from Vaughan’s first three albums, plus covers of « Willie the Wimp, » « I’m Leaving You (Commit a Crime), » and Stevie Wonder’s « Superstition. » Most live blues recordings have a feeling of intimacy, as if the concerts took place in some out-of-the-way venue for an audience who not only know all the lyrics, but know the performers personally as well. Live Alive, in contrast, feels like a large-scale rock concert, an epic production full of grand gestures. But really, nothing suited Stevie Ray Vaughan’s style better; everything, from the overall sound to the solos, feels big.

Line up:

Stevie Ray Vaughan: guitar, vocals,
Jimmie Vaughan:guitar, bass ( Tks 8, 9, 13)
Tommy Shannon: bass,
Chris « Whipper » Layton: drums,
Reese Wynans: keyboards.

« Showtime! » is the thirteenth album (and third live album). It was recorded at the Pine Knob Music Theater, and proved commercially successfully but most critics consider it to be weaker than the group’s two earlier live albums « Live » Full House (1972) and Blow Your Face Out (1976).If you like hot, sweaty, blues-based boogie rock played with a good-time frenetic approach, J. Geils is the band for you and any of their aforementioned live albums will represent nicely. The sudden commercial success, however, could not heal tensions brewing within the band—particularly those between songwriters Wolf and Justman. After the success of Freeze-Frame, the band only recorded this live album. When the band allegedly refused material Wolf had written with R&B vocalist Don Covay and Michael Jonzun of the hip-hop act the Jonzun Crew, Wolf left the band for a solo career. This was the last release Peter Wolf.

Line up:

Peter Wolf: vocals
J. Geils: guitar
Seth Justman: keyboard, vocals
Danny Klein: bass
Magic Dick: harmonica, saxophone
Stephen Bladd: percussion, drums, backing vocals

Too Slim & the Taildraggers is a great live band! If you need proof, here’s 75 minutes of it. Unfortunately, it’s not all taken from one show, but you might not know it from listening. The benefit though, is that these are the best versions they could find of many of their best songs.Lots of great guitar here. This is Too Slim & the Taildraggers at their best! If you only buy one disc by them, make it this one. Too Slim’s ever- evolving musical direction cannot be classified into any box or category. The eclectic nature of the band allows Too Slim and the Taildraggers to easily cross-over and appeal to audiences of various musical tastes.

Beck, Bogert & Appice is the eponymous debut album by the 1970s band Beck, Bogert & Appice. They were a supergroup and power trio, with the line up of guitarist Jeff Beck (who had already been a member of The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group), bassist Tim Bogert, and drummer Carmine Appice (both formerly members of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus). It’s hard to tell what exactly attracted Beck to the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus — perhaps he just wanted to rock really loud and really hard, beating Led Zeppelin at their own game. Whatever the motivation, the end result was the same — a leaden album, with occasional interesting guitar work smothered by heavy riffs and rhythms that don’t succeed on a visceral level. The album had solid sales in 1973. This was the band’s only studio album, as Beck left the band without warning during the recording of their second album, forcing a sudden dissolution in 1974.

Line up:

Jeff Beck: Vocals, Guitar,
Tim Bogert: Vocals, Bass,
Carmine Appice: Vocals, Drums.

and:
Jimmy Greenspoon: piano
Duane Hitchings: piano, Mellotron
Danny Hutton: background vocals

The Blues Band is a virtual who’s who of the British blues scene. Although formed in 1979, the band released its debut album, The Bootleg Album, in 1980 as supposedly a one-time live project. The album was originally a private pressing, recorded live and released by the band themselves, but it sold so well it was re-released intact by Arista after signing the band to a contract. The Blues Band became so popular that they got together as a permanent unit and recorded another album in 1980 called Ready. A superb package and a must for any fan of British blues music.

Line up:

Tom McGuinness ( Manfred Mann, McGuinness Flint): Backing Vocals, Guitar
Gary Fletcher ( Sam Apple Pie): Bass Guitar
Hughie Flint (McGuinness Flint): Drums
Paul Jones (Manfred Mann): Lead Vocals, Harmonica
Dave Kelly (John Drummer Blues Band): Lead Vocals, Slide Guitar
Ian Stewart: Piano

Big Brother & The Holding Company feat. Janis Joplin (1967)

Big Brother and The Holding Company feat. Janis Joplin - Big Brother and The Holding Company (1967-2016)

Genre: Rock, Blues-Rock

The debut, self-titled album from Big Brother & the Holding Company is an evolving paradigm, ten tracks initially issued on Mainstream Records. Unfortunately for Janis Joplin and Big Brother & the Holding Company, the respectable performances and all of the material on this disc are undercut by a weak production that sounds rushed. If this were your only taste of Janis Joplin, you would certainly wonder what all the fuss was about. Other than the brilliance of Bye Bye Baby and Down on Me to a lesser extent (the band’s uninspiring, pedestrian playing leaves much to be desired), there’s very little compelling about this initial debut from Big Brother & The Holding Company. The band play very standard and generic blues and R&B riffs with little to no sophistication, creativity or soul and Janis’ singing is more shouting and exclaiming than it is harshly evocative, playful and soulful. What you are left with are inklings of the magnificent blues shouter Janis had already proven to be at Monterey Pop Festival in June but mostly filler and a rather contrived attempt at merging blues, R&B and psychedelia into something worthy of other San Francisco mainstays of the Haight-Ashbury scene.

Line up:

Janis Joplin – vocals
Peter Albin – bass guitar
Sam Andrew – guitar, vocals
David Getz – drums
James Gurley – guitar, vocals
