The Mustangs – Rocking Horse (2010)

Release Date:2010
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
Label: Raging Horse
UK

The Mustangs are a British blues rock band that was formed in Hampshire in 2001. They are unusual on the blues rock circuit as their albums are made of entirely original material. The Mustangs were nominated for Best Band at the 2010 British Blues Awards. As well as their own material, in concert the group often plays some blues standards, though radically reinterpreting the arrangement to suit the band’s « truly storming… ferocious » sound.Chiefly influenced by the British blues rock bands of the 1960s, such as Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac, as well as Dr. Feelgood, the Mustangs also draw on more traditional blues influences such as Muddy Waters, Elmore James and Robert Johnson. The band’s use of blues harp, played by Derek Kingaby, adds to an authentic, traditional blues sound. « Rocking Horse » is the second album of the band.

Line up:

Adam Norsworthy: lead guitar, vocals,
Derek Kingaby: blues harp,
Jonathan Bartley: drums, backing vocals,
Ben McKeown: bass guitar, backing vocals.

This archival album of previously unreleased material. The recordings contained on this album are not state-of-the-art stereophonic high-fidelity.The performances were captured live on simple equipment, some at 3 3/4 i.p.s. Sound quality is iffy, the song selection is given over to blues classics (« I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man ») on Side One and Mayall originals on Side Two, and on the whole this album seems to represent the bottom of the barrel in terms of digging up old Mayall/Clapton tracks. Despite the unpolished sound, what prevails is a spontaneity and high energy level that makes for some extraordinary solos from everyone.

The Blues Band is a virtual who’s who of the British blues scene. Although formed in 1979, the band released its debut album, The Bootleg Album, in 1980 as supposedly a one-time live project. The album was originally a private pressing, recorded live and released by the band themselves, but it sold so well it was re-released intact by Arista after signing the band to a contract. The Blues Band became so popular that they got together as a permanent unit and recorded another album in 1980 called Ready. A superb package and a must for any fan of British blues music.

Chicken Shack - Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (2005) 3CD Set

Great-Britain-180-animated-flag-gifsRelease Date: March 7, 2006

Formed and led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb, Chicken Shack were one of the first bands to be signed to the Blue Horizon label in the mid-’60s. As of this compilation’s release in 2006, Webb was still fronting a version of the group. While never attaining any success in the States, Chicken Shack were well known in the U.K., with fleeting success second only to John Mayall and labelmates Fleetwood Mac. This three-disc set collects the band’s entire output for the imprint from 1967-1969 and includes alternate takes, singles, and B-sides (56 tracks in all), and also features terrific liner notes by label head/producer Mike Vernon.Occasional use of horns distinguished Chicken Shack from both Mac and Savoy Brown, another band very much in the Shack style and one with whom they swapped members. These three discs include the contents of four albums and assorted singles, with much of this music hard to obtain.

Line up:

Stan Webb – guitar, vocals
Andy Silvester – bass
Christine Perfect – keyboards, vocals
Alan Morley – drums
Al Sykes – drums
Hughie Flint – drums

2010 three CD set that contains their first five albums for Liberty Records (1968-72) plus bonus tracks. With a career that spans an impressive five decades, the Groundhogs are a veritable British Blues-Rock institution. With a line-up cemented around Peter Cruickshank on bass guitar, Ken Pustelnik on drums and fronted by singer, guitarist and principle songwriter Tony (T.S.) McPhee, this bluesy power trio were joined by harmonica toting Steve Rye for their full length debut, Scratching The Surface released on Liberty Records in 1968. With a reputation hard won by their incessant touring schedule, the band recorded Blues Obituary as a three piece in 1969, followed by Thanks Christ For The Bomb (1970), then hitting #5 with their most successful record, Split, in 1971 and rounded off by the fabulously titled Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs (1972).

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers - Live In 1967 (2015)

Genre: Blues Rock, British Blues

This album sounds like a group of white British blues rockers playing the blues. Is that because all the white, British blues rockers came through John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers? Yes. Well maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but not much of one. This special live recording is available courtesy of a hardcore Mayall fan from Holland by the name of Tom Huissen, who concealed a one-channel reel-to-reel tape recorder on his person as he attended shows at a handful of London clubs (including the legendary Marquee) in early 1967, recording the band’s performance each night.Unheard for fifty years, the tapes were acquired by Mayall and restored. The sound on these restored tracks is not as beautifully clean as we have come to expect from live albums, but that doesn’t matter. This is true blues recorded in a club setting, and I don’t know how you can get any better feeling for the music if you weren’t there in 1967.If you are familiar with John Mayall—and you should be—this album fills a gap in time that you should greatly appreciate hearing.

Line up:

John Mayall – Vocals, guitar, harmonica
Peter Green – Guitar
Mick Fleetwood – drums
John McVie – bass

Hip Young Guitar Slinger and « His Heavy Friends » focuses on Jimmy Page’s work as a session guitarist for the Immediate and Pye labels in the ’60s. The first disc includes the poppier end of his work behind Gregory Phillips, the Kinks and Nico, while the second disc finds him in more familiar territory backing English blues masters like Eric Clapton, John Mayall and Jeff Beck. Fans of Led Zeppelin won’t find any lost gems here, but this collection does shine a light on Page’s successful pre-Zep music career.

1977 compilation for the elder statesman of British blues.Legendary Performances from the Archives with Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Jack Bruce.Despite the unpolished sound, what prevails is a spontaneity and high energy level that makes for some extraordinary solos from everyone.Primal Solos is a rare documentation of the British blues genre at it’s most raw and vital.Mayall’s bands were always looked to for high quality musicianship (not to mention future luminaries). The players here were at certain youthful peaks that remain unparalleled.

On May 28th, 2012, Alvin Lee played what sadly proved to be his last live show at a festival in Holland. Backed by Pete Pritchard on bass and Richard Newman on drums, Alvin and the band were described by all in attendance as being on fire that night, playing one of the finest shows of his long and impressive career. Luckily, the show was recorded in its entirety and now, thanks to the efforts of his family, we well all get the opportunity to experience the magic of Alvin Lee one more time.
