Label: Vee-Jay/Collectables
USA

Vee Jay’s 1964 album John Lee Hooker on Campus is titled to sound like a live recording but it isn’t. As part of the Collectables Vee Jay reissue campaign, these 12 tracks originally tried to capitalize on Hooker’s emergence on the coffeehouse/college tours he was involved in at the time. This is an electric album that contains excellent material from Hooker, even though the occasional background singers get in the way, attempting to modernize his gritty blues with a smoother soul sound.

Line up:

Tomato’s « Dust My Broom » collects some of the last recordings of Elmore James’ career, including « Baby Please Set a Date, » « The Sky Is Crying, » « Done Somebody Wrong, » and « Shake Your Moneymaker. » As is expected, James’ incendiary slide guitar cuts through every track. « Rollin’ and Tumblin’, » « Anna Lee, » « Fine Little Mama, » and « One Way Out » are some of the other highlights of this collection, which may not be as definitive as Rhino’s The Sky Is Crying, but still offers enough essential songs and performances to make it worthwhile.

Born in Dublin, Mississippi in 1943, Jimmy Burns derived his earliest inspiration from the records of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and others. After Jimmy moved to Chicago in the mid-’50s he discovered a scene that was perfect for the meld of traditional blues, churchy emotionalism, and forward-looking pop/R&B sophistication that by then comprised his musical aesthetic. Live at B.L.U.E.S. captures perfectly the indelible combination of joyful spirits, warm-hearted intimacy, and sharp-witted intelligence that characterizes Jimmy Burns, as both a musician and a man. Jimmy Burns, Born in 1943 near the Delta town of Dublin, Mississippi, embodies that increasingly rare combination of blues roots deep enough to tap into ‘the real thing’, while still possessing the youth and vitality to present his music with plenty of life and real excitement. He honed his vocal skills singing with vocal groups in the ’50s, and over the years has perfected an appeallingly melodic, vocal-inflected contemorar guitar style to complement the down-home picking he’d learned in his youth. In the studio Jimmy and his regular band played off one another with a musical empathy that comes only from countless nights of proving themselves on the bandstand. With Leaving Here Walking, Jimmy pays tribute to his earliest musicla inspirations, revisits the era of classic R&B, and presents well-crafted originals covering all the facets of his long and varied life in music.

Volume 1 (1st April 1939 to 15th June 1940). Lead Belly’s Commercial recordings.
Blues and ballads
Lead Belly, vocal twelve-string guitar
Includes performance by The Golden Gate Quartet

The Austrian Document Records label begins its series of CDs presenting Leadbelly’s commercial recordings in chronological order from 1939.the singer « had recorded a combined total of well over two hundred titles » prior to that date, tracks made either for the Library of Congress or ARC Records under the auspices of John Lomax. Still, most of those tracks had not been issued, and, contrarily, most became readily available later on either Elektra or Columbia Records. Two exceptions are 1935 alternate takes of « Daddy I’m Coming Back to You » (take three) and « Shorty George » (take two), which lead this album off as bonus tracks. Otherwise, the remaining 23 tracks comprise two sets of sessions from 1939 and 1940, first a bunch of recordings Leadbelly made as a solo performer for Musicraft Records, which issued them as an album called Negro Sinful Tunes, and second the first group of tracks for RCA Victor, some featuring the Golden Gate Quartet, and issued either on the album The Midnight Special and Other Prison Songs or on singles on the discount-priced Bluebird Records subsidiary. The singer is in prime shape, and his guitar playing is typically forceful. The tracks have been transferred from old vinyl discs, with hiss and crackles audible throughout, but the sound quality is generally good.

Genre: Blues, Acoustic Delta Blues

Recorded live at The Gaslight Cafe, New York, New York on January 3, 1963.The fire had long since gone out, although he was capable of generating a facsimile of the old roar on occasion, as this set recorded at Gaslight Café in New York in 1965 shows. The versions here of « Empire State Express » and « Death Letter Blues » (nearly nine minutes long and still incomplete, even at that length) are startling in their intensity, showing some of the power of the 1930s material, but it is obvious on most of the other tracks that age and a long, hard life have left House a mere shadow of his former musical self. Still, just like you don’t want to be caught by a Baptist preacher (an occupation House once practiced) trying to sneak out on the sermon, it’s nearly impossible not to listen to this set clear through once it begins. It feels like an important bit of living history, and behind every tortured, exhausted note you can almost hear the ghost of Son House in his fiery prime. (Steve Leggett).

Big Joe Williams may have been the most cantankerous human being who ever walked the earth with guitar in hand. At the same time, he was an incredible blues musician: a gifted songwriter, a powerhouse vocalist, and an exceptionally idiosyncratic guitarist. Anyone who wants to learn Delta blues must one day come to grips with the idea that the guitar is a drum as well as a melody-producing instrument.Big Joe Williams, more than any other major recording artist, embodied the concept of guitar-as-drum, bashing out an incredible series of riffs on his G-tuned nine-string for over 60 years.

Eric Deaton moved from North Carolina to Mississippi straight out of high school and entered a higher education program of moonshine-fueled hill country blues at the world-renowned Junior Kimbrough’s juke joint in the mid to late ’90’s. Apprenticing under the late trance-blues masters Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside (and various other members of their extended families), Eric was thoroughly immersed in the North Mississippi blues tradition.Eric’s sound is firmly rooted in the electric juke joint style, with dashes of influence from early Funkadelic and a nod to the blues’ West African roots.
