The Smokin’ Joe Kubek & B’nois King – Steppin’ Out Texas Style (1991)

Release Date: 1991
Genre: Modern Electric Texas Blues, Blues Rock
Label: Rounder, Bullseye Blues Records
USA

The debut recording of a blues band that’s been in all the right places: hailing from Texas, discovered in Memphis, recorded in New Orleans. Smokin’ Joe learned his trade from Freddy King, Albert King, John Lee Hooker and Little Joe Blue. B’nois King can just about match Joe lick for lick, and his vocals are the genuine article, right out of Otis Rush. Smokin’ Joe Kubek’s debut album is a delight. Kubek leads his band through a set of smoking hot Texas and Memphis blues, delivered with passion, they can play this music with precision, but they choose to be looser and more fun than most traditionalists. Kubek’s a skillful guitarist and B’Nois King, his vocalist and rhythm guitarist, can play nearly as well and their duels are the high watermark of an already wonderful album.

Line up:

Smokin’ Joe Kubek: lead, slide, tremolo guitars
B’nois King: vocal, second guitar
Greg Wright: Fender bass

In the Beginning is the second live album by Stevie (Ray) Vaughan and Double Trouble (the stage name at that time did not include Vaughan’s middle name). While the album was released about two years after Vaughan’s death in 1990, the actual performance took place on April 1, 1980 at Steamboat 1874 in Austin, Texas. This live broadcast captures a young Stevie Vaughan (he had yet to become Stevie Ray) blasting the hometown crowd with a style that was already very well-formed. Taken from the surviving two-track master, Vaughan’s guitar is raw and in your face every note of the way. Fans of this mercurial guitarist will want to add this one to the collection.

Bass – Jackie Newhouse
Drums – Chris Layton
Vocals, Guitar – Stevie Ray Vaughan

Long John Hunter – Border Town Legend (1996)

Long John Hunter - Border Town Legend (1996)

Genre: Blues, Electric Blues, Texas Blues
Label: Alligator Records
USA

18f7930fad60fbdb8a8200d3f35d8a3c

For many years Long John Hunter played in clubs without much attention, but that time sweating it out in roadhouses has paid off. During that time, he developed a gutsy, forceful technique that was fully evident on his belated 1993 debut, Ride With Me. Although his second album, Border Town Legend, is a slicker, more accessible effort, Hunter hasn’t lost any of his spicy, distinctive flavor. Working with a horn section, he still manages to make himself the most powerful element on the record — both his guitar playing and his heated vocals ensure that. Furthermore, Hunter’s songwriting is growing stronger. Out of the nine songs he has written or co-written for the album, he has contributed some first-rate tunes that might not stretch beyond generic conventions, but still are mighty fine.

Line up:

Long John Hunter (vocals, guitar);
Hunter Hamonettes (vocals);

Guitarist T-Bone Walker is one of the most influential musicians in musical history. The Texan was one of the pioneers of the electric guitar and his recordings, made in the early 1940s for Capitol, Rhumboogie, and Black & White, are some of the earliest defining moments for electric blues. His playing was influential upon others of his era: most notably B.B. King but also several jazz players and many rock greats. This album didn t sell well, is difficult to find and is largely forgotten. This is its first reissue, and is taken from original master tapes. As a bonus Ace have added two tracks that were recorded at a 1970 show at the Carnegie Hall, New York.

Line up:

T-Bone Walker – guitar, vocals
Louie Shelton – guitar
Paul Humphrey – drums
Max Bennett – bass
Artie Butler – piano, organ

Robert Ealey was born December 6, 1925 in Texarkana, Texas.Influenced by the likes of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Lil’ Son Jackson, Frankie Lee Sims and Aaron “T-Bone” Walker, he began singing blues professionally at 20 after he moved to Dallas. In nearby Fort Worth, he joined the Boogie Chillen Boys and became a featured vocalist at the Blue Bird Club in Fort Worth there. After singing there for 20 years, Ealey bought the Blue Bird Club and ran it for another ten years.In 1990, Ealey hooked up with guitarist Tone Sommer and began touring outside of Texas. The band quickly found an audience for their authentic Texas urban blues in Europe, where they have toured more than a dozen times since 1990.Robert Ealey passed away March 8, 2001, of undisclosed causes following an automobile accident the previous December.
