The Outlaws – Outlaws (1975)

Release Date: 1975
Genre: Blues, Southern Blues, Southern Rock
Label: Arista
USA (Florida)

The Outlaws’ self-titled debut was released in 1975, a few years after the Allman Brothers Band’s greatest glories and a couple of years before the untimely demise of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. The Outlaws latched onto their Southern heritage by way of Florida, threw in some harmony by way of the Eagles, and then wrote a number of songs that played to their strengths. The result was — and is — a good classic rock & roll album.

Line up:

Hughie Thomasson: lead guitar, vocals,
Billy Jones: lead guitar, vocals,
Monte Yoho: drums,
Frank O’Keefe: bass guitar,
Henry Paul: electric and acoustic guitar, vocals.

The Marshall Tucker Band – The Marshall Tucker Band (1973)

Release Date: April 1973
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Country Rock
Label: Capricorn
USA (Spartanburg, South Carolina)

Taking a page from their Capricorn Records labelmates and Southern rock contemporaries the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band issued a self-titled debut blending the long and winding psychedelic and jam band scene with an equally languid and otherwise laid-back country-rock flavor. Their free-spirited brand of Southern rock was a direct contrast to the badass rebel image projected by the Outlaws or Lynyrd Skynyrd. This difference is reflected throughout this 1973 long-player.

Line up:

Doug Gray: lead vocals, percussion
Toy Caldwell: lead guitar, steel guitar, lead vocals on « Can’t You See, » « Hillbilly Band, » and « AB’s Song »
Tommy Caldwell: bass guitar, percussion, background vocals
George McCorkle: rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, percussion

The Allman Brothers Band – Fillmore East, February (1970)

Release Date: March 4, 1997
Genre: Blues, Blues-Rock, Southern Rock,  Jam Band
Label: Grateful Dead Records
USA

« The Allman Brothers shared the bill with the Grateful Dead on several notable occasions. This release recalls the Brothers in support of the Dead and Love in February 1970 at the fabulous Fillmore East. No specific dates for the performances are noted, so it is presumed this release is a composite from recordings made at some point during the two sets per night that the Allman’s performed on February 11th through the 14th. There is no mistaking the unbridled fervor of the original line-up of the band. Rising to the challenge of exploratory psychedelia — while remaining ever faithful to their Southern blues roots — blues standards such as « (I’m Gonna Move to The) Outskirts of Town » and « Hoochie Coochie Man » are strengthened and extended beyond their typical assertions. No longer are they relegated to the inadequately rendered thrashings of garage rock. Betts and the Allman’s understand the dynamics of blues. »– AMG Review by Lindsay Planer

The name “Van Zant” is synonymous with Southern Rock.Ronnie Van Zant was the leader of the genre, and the leader of Lynyrd Skynyrd. His death in the infamous plane crash took his status from hero to legend. « Red White & Blue » (Live), is a recently unearthed live Van Zant show recorded on January 28, 2006 at Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta, Georgia and is the only concert recording in existence from the only tour by brothers Johnny (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie (38 Special). This ‘lost’ live album was discovered by Donnie’s 38 Special bandmate Larry Jungstron. It was Larry who had bought recording equipment and recorded the show, with the brothers’ permission. This album is a mixture of Van Zant’s rocking roots, as well as their love of country music. Donnie and Johnny knew their brother had always wanted to do a country record. He died before that dream could come true. They did it for Ronnie, but now, Loud & Proud has given the music to all of us! The Van Zants’ significant contribution to southern rock, country and popular music across the board have created an unparalleled legacy. They may even be The First Family of American Music. It doesn’t get any more Red White & Blue than that.

It’s the third album (and second studio album) recorded by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Eric Clapton is usually thought of as John Mayall’s most important right-hand man, but the case could also be made for his successor, Peter Green. The future Fleetwood Mac founder leaves a strong stamp on his only album with the Bluesbreakers.Mayall acquits himself fairly well on this mostly original set (with occasional guest horns), though some of the material is fairly mundane. Highlights include the uncharacteristically rambunctious « Leaping Christine » and the cover of Freddie King’s « Someday After a While (You’ll Be Sorry). The cover art and the original LP sleeve design are by Mayall.

Line up:

John Mayall: vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, organ

Recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis, Baptist Town is steeped in the rich history of the South and the folklore that is so important to American culture. The catalyst for the record is the small neighborhood outside Greenwood Mississippi where legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson was murdered in 1938. The trio (Jerry Angel, John Bazz, and Mike Eldred) invited several guests to lend a hand in the making of Baptist Town including David Hidalgo, Robert Cray, and John Mayer. The dichotomy between love and hate, rich and poor, sin and salvation, black and white, are apparent throughout the record, and reflect many of society s struggles that continue to haunt us all.

The story of the Allman Brothers Band is one of triumph, tragedy, redemption, dissolution, and more redemption. Since their beginning in the late ’60s, they went from being America’s single most influential band to a shell of their former self trading on past glories, to reach the 21st century resurrected as one of the most respected rock acts of their era. This 3 CD captures the entire show broadcast that legendary night more than 40 years ago. Capturing the group almost fully recovered from the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, and with a little help from their friends, they deliver one of their most outstanding performances ever.

As said Rusty Burns: »The RELOADED recording was not intended to be an album. We pulled together as many of the band members as we could, to do a benefit for one of our former road crew members who was in desperate need of a liver transplant. I felt we should record the show to document the music and spirit of the event. When we listened to the recording afterward, we were all shocked that we had a memorable performance after 25 years of not playing together! »
