Genre: Blues, British R&B
Label: London / Decca / Digital Dowload-Polydor

This archival album of previously unreleased material.The recordings contained on this album are not state-of-the-art stereophonic high-fidelity.The performances were captured live on simple equipment, some at 3 3/4 i.p.s. Sound quality is iffy, the song selection is given over to blues classics (« I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man ») on Side One and Mayall originals on Side Two, and on the whole this album seems to represent the bottom of the barrel in terms of digging up old Mayall/Clapton tracks. Despite the unpolished sound, what prevails is a spontaneity and high energy level that makes for some extraordinary solos from everyone.

Nine Below Zero – Don’t Point Your Finger (1981)

Genre: Blues Rock, R & B, Pub Rock
Label: A&M Records

They were a hard one to pin down all those years ago. The obvious Feelgoods influence was there, late 70s, but they were way too cocksure and sharp to fit in with the decaying pub rock scene. Sure, they were energetic enough to be tied in with punk but they had the musical chops and grounding in R&B and the blues that kept them separate. The mod revival toddled along and toddled off again pretty quickly and despite Nine Below Zero having the monochromatic razor-creased suits and the proper influences, they weren’t pretty boy enough for most of the fledgling modsters.

Nine Below Zero was a classic artifact of the late British punk scene, a searing blues-rock set that recalled the energy of the early performances of the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, and the Animals, but presented in a manner closer to the punk era that had just come to a close and which slotted right in with the contemporary mod revival. Anyone who enjoyed the first three or four Dr. Feelgood albums should definitely try Live at the Marquee on for size.Turn the volume up, stick a T-Shirt on and prepare to put yourself into a small venue which is busting at the seams, the band in your face, the audience is sweating, and you love it !This album is about as good as it gets when it comes to the many attempts to put live music onto disc and re-creating the music, the atmosphere, and the raw emotions that being part of a live gig. Here are some great songs, superb harmonica and guitar breaks, and the back line keeps thumping away. There is no let up, it just keeps chugging and chugging …

The secret link between new wave music, pub-rock and rhythm & blues is NINE BELOW ZERO. This album is so full of energy, party, summer, early 80’s frustration and melody played with a straight-in-your-face attitude. Real alive musicians dominated by a bass that is very present in the mix spiced with Dennis Greaves cool vocal and Mark Felthams singing harmonica. What a band! It is hit after hit even though only one song formally can said to be just that. But, but, but every tune is a winner and should have been a hit.

Rare 1970 album produced by Johnny Otis featuring the stinging guitar of his son Shuggie – with two previously unissued bonus tracks Bluesman Slim Green made very few records in a career that started in 1948 and ended with this LP in 1970. He made his first records in 1948 for local labels. Listening to them suggests a player full of country influences, updating them for a modern urban audience.Guitar Slim Green wasn’t a prolific bluesman by any means. He recorded several sides in the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s, including a pair of singles for Johnny Otis’ Dig, but perhaps his best-known recording is 1970’s Stone Down Blues, his only full-length record.

Shuggie Otis – Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues (1994)

Shuggie Otis - Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues (1994)

USA FlagOriginal Release Date: May 10, 1994
Reissue: March 1, 2008
Genre: Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Soul
Label: Epic/Legacy
USA (Los Angeles, California)

18f7930fad60fbdb8a8200d3f35d8a3c

Culled from four albums, except for one previously unreleased track, Shuggie’s Boogie: Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues is a tour de force made all the more remarkable because the prodigy who produced it was so young. In fact, Shuggie Otis recalls during a boyish spoken intro in « Shuggie’s Boogie » how he used to wear dark glasses and paint on a mustache to look older than his 14 or 15 years when he played in bars in the band of his legendary father Johnny Otis. During the same intro he effortlessly throws off guitar impersonations of T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Elmore James. This compilation has a few rousing, up-tempo numbers, but the highlights are the slow, soulful tunes. One unfortunate omission is the seven-minute « Oxford Gray » from his 1970 album Here Comes Shuggie Otis.

Blues Brothers – Blues Masters: The Blues Brothers (2014)

Whether celebrated as a sincere tribute or derided as a tongue-in-cheek put-on, the Blues Brothers — Joliet Jake and his silent brother Elwood — was among the most popular groups of the late ’70s; what started as a skit on the hit NBC television sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live quickly snowballed to become a true phenomenon, complete with hit records, a sold-out concert tour, and even a feature film. Clad in vintage black suits, narrow ties, fedoras, and omnipresent wrap-around sunglasses, the Blues Brothers delivered spirited renditions of classic soul hits in the tradition of the signature Stax-Volt sound; purists may still cringe, but if nothing else the group deserves credit for introducing any number of soul and blues classics to a new generation of listeners while also allowing some of the most gifted session men in the business a chance to shine on-stage and -screen.

Bobby Rush with BlindDog Smokin’ – Decisions (2014)

Bobby Rush with BlindDog Smokin' - Decisions (2014)

Genre: Blues, R&B
Label: Silver Talon Records
USA

Bobby Rush doesn’t fool around when it comes to his blues. On Decisions, he and the band Blinddog Smokin’ roll out some down and dirty funk-blues just like you like. It’s the music for backrooms, alleys, cathouses. It’s almost fitting that the lead off track is about murder and violence. Dr. John adds his voice and piano riffs to that opening track together with Bobby Rush, they create a true blues commentary on the state of everyone’s favorite city of second chances, New Orleans.The music ranges from sound track music for your next blacksploitation film, to danceworthy funk, to classic 12 bar blues tracks.And it’s all held together with Bobby Rush’s sing-song voice and delivery. It’s vaguely reminiscent of a James Brown vibe, but less spastic and more bluesy.

Line up:

Bobby Rush (vocals)
Eric Bernhardt (vocals, saxophone)
Big Llou Johnson, Yolanda « Peb » Windsay, Carl Gustafson, Lorenzo Castillo, Linda McCrary, Jolynda Philips (vocals)

Mick Abrahams’ Blodwyn Pig – All Tore Down Live

It would be difficult to imagine a better live album coming from the likes of the Blodwyn Pig. The music is pure R&B, mid-’60s British style only more soulful than most of those bands ever got–Abrahams and company perform dazzling, passionate renditions of their best songs, including « Lies, » a tribute to Alexis Korner (« I Wonder Who »), and even an extended (17 minutes, no less) version of « Cat’s Squirrel, » a song that Abrahams brought to Jethro Tull’s This Was back in 1968. One of those rare cases–you might say a unique example–of a revamped, reformed sixties/seventies band outdoing its original incarnation on every count.

Line up:

Mick Abrahams (vocals, guitar);
Dave Lennox (keyboards);
Mike Summerland (bass);
Graham Walker (drums).
