After Glasgow punk band Johnny & the Self Abusers broke up, some of the members formed the massively successful Simple Minds. The others formed the more modest Cuban Heels. Within four months of the break, the Heels already had their first single (Downtown, on Housewive’s Choice) in the shops. At the time of its release, the band was bassist Paul Armour, guitarist Laurie Cuffe, vocalist John Milarky, and drummer Dave Duncan. They set up their own label, Cuba Libre, to release the Walk on Water single in 1980. Armour left and was replaced by Nick Clarke in time for the 1981 singles Sweet Charity and My Colours Fly; the LP Work Our Way to Heaven was also out by the end of the year, as well as a single in support of it.

Stand On The Ocean is dedicated to going to the source to capture the blues and other roots music before « the suits, focus groups and PC Police get their hands on it ». This offering featuring veteran Delta gunslinger Terry ‘Big T’ Williams proves the point and provides a taste of the big energy in an intimate setting still found in Mississippi’s jukes. Lonesome Shack – City Man

Original Release Date: February 19, 2013
Genre: Juke Joint Blues
Label: Knick Knack
USA

Lonesome Shack is a three-piece drone/blues/boogie band from Seattle, WA. This recording was done live at Seattle’s Cafe Racer in April 2012.On the surface, it’s easy to burrow into City Man and imagine it was recorded in some Mississippi juke joint a long, long time ago (accentuated by the fact that Todd pushes both his guitar and the vocal through the same little amp). But when you put an ear to what’s really going on, you start hearing all the subtle-but-wild-ass stuff Garrard’s doing – or the cool how-did-he-do-that riffs Todd pulls, tugs, and flecks out of his Tiesco’s strings or Bergman’s not-what-you-would’ve-expected-was-going-to-happen approach to blues bass. And therein lies the secret to Lonesome Shack: you can have a happy, casual hangout with City Man and have a good time or you can dig into the thing as deeply as you like and find a treasure trove of mind-blowing grooves that go somewhere beyond the traditional.

Line up:

Ben Todd – guitar and sing
