K.C. Douglas passed away in 1975,but his blues live on with this fine collection. Douglas played low-down country blues. No matter if he was backed by a small group(here it’s Richard Riggins-harmonica,Ron Thompson-guitar,and Jim Marshall-drums)or simply accompanying himself on guitar, his Mississippi up-bringing shone through all his material. With his Mississippi-country guitar and his lived-in voice,Douglas is someone that everyone who likes unpretentious hill-country style blues should consider listening.

Line up:

Richard Riggins – harmonica
Jim Marshall – Drums

FALL YOUR WAY showcases the Connecticut singer-songwriter’s signature whiskey shot, bluesy vocals over the “constant strum” guitar style he picked up as a young teenager tailgating in the parking lots of Dave Matthews Band concerts.Frank Viele constructs his sound beneath an acoustic funk ceiling with windows of alternative pop, folk and soul. A musical carpenter in the independent rock genre, this singer/songwriters approach mixes a dry wit with a soulful touch.

Time traveler Alvin Youngblood Hart’s albums have darted from crusty Delta fingerpicking and hollering to Hendrixian hellfire to crunchy, primal rockin’ blues, all with the ring of authority that comes from complete commitment to the music. This time, he’s set the wayback machine to the early ’30s, using guitars, mandolin, banjo, and a lot of heart to interpret tunes by Son House, Charley Patton, Skip James, Leadbelly, and others. One of Alvin Youngblood Hart’s most critically acclaimed albums, « Down In The Alley, » is a solo outing that finds the blues world’s preeminent « young turk » going back to the genre’s acoustic roots.

There are also two tunes from Billy and Johnny Magic, three solo efforts and a studio version of ‘Don’t Cha Love Me Babe’ with Crew members Erle Saunders on guitar and Rick Henderson on drums. All the tracks reflect Billy’s americana roots. The first volume of the Mbirafon “Blues At Home” Collection, this CD features one of the most intense voices of the blues, Van Zula Carter Hunt. This central figure in the Memphis blues scene was born in 1901 in Somerville, Tennessee, but spent her whole life in Memphis. She started singing and playing at age five, performing with her brother and cousins in a group called Somerville Family Band.
Mose Vinson was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, in 1917. He learned how to play the piano at the age of five from his mother, who played the organ at church. His father, also a musician and a piano player, taught him his first musical elements and some early blues. Vinson started playing in public in 1932 around the age of 15 and was spotted for his talent by some white managers in 1936. He studied and learned to read music, and joined a band in Nashville for six years. He recalled leaving Holly Springs at an early age and traveling in the areas of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, reaching Memphis in 1945, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Van Hunt’s daughter Sweet Charlene Peeples was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1936. She received her musical training mainly in church vocal groups and during the late 1940s and 1950s in local nightclubs. She performed professionally on several Memphis stages. A very reserved person, Charlene stopped her musical activities during the early 1970s.This CD features four examples of Van Hunt on vocal and guitar, and various tracks accompanied by Mose Vinson’s piano. Volume 1 (1st April 1939 to 15th June 1940). Lead Belly’s Commercial recordings.
Blues and ballads
Lead Belly, vocal twelve-string guitar
Includes performance by The Golden Gate Quartet

The Austrian Document Records label begins its series of CDs presenting Leadbelly’s commercial recordings in chronological order from 1939.the singer « had recorded a combined total of well over two hundred titles » prior to that date, tracks made either for the Library of Congress or ARC Records under the auspices of John Lomax. Still, most of those tracks had not been issued, and, contrarily, most became readily available later on either Elektra or Columbia Records. Two exceptions are 1935 alternate takes of « Daddy I’m Coming Back to You » (take three) and « Shorty George » (take two), which lead this album off as bonus tracks. Otherwise, the remaining 23 tracks comprise two sets of sessions from 1939 and 1940, first a bunch of recordings Leadbelly made as a solo performer for Musicraft Records, which issued them as an album called Negro Sinful Tunes, and second the first group of tracks for RCA Victor, some featuring the Golden Gate Quartet, and issued either on the album The Midnight Special and Other Prison Songs or on singles on the discount-priced Bluebird Records subsidiary. The singer is in prime shape, and his guitar playing is typically forceful. The tracks have been transferred from old vinyl discs, with hiss and crackles audible throughout, but the sound quality is generally good.

This album presents a variety of country blues and original tunes played solo as well as with friends. Some were recently recorded while others were released on projects that are no longer available but I thought fitted together nicely in the jigsaw pattern of my musical development. For years I toured with Duck Baker. It was always a joy playing with him. Just a Closer Walk, Blues For The Mann and Old Country Rock are duets. The combination of my country blues background and Duck’s jazz sensibilities makes playing together an adventure.

Son House – ‘live’ At Gaslight Cafe, N.Y.C., January 3, 1965 (2000)

Recorded live at The Gaslight Cafe, New York, New York on January 3, 1963.The fire had long since gone out, although he was capable of generating a facsimile of the old roar on occasion, as this set recorded at Gaslight Café in New York in 1965 shows. The versions here of « Empire State Express » and « Death Letter Blues » (nearly nine minutes long and still incomplete, even at that length) are startling in their intensity, showing some of the power of the 1930s material, but it is obvious on most of the other tracks that age and a long, hard life have left House a mere shadow of his former musical self. Still, just like you don’t want to be caught by a Baptist preacher (an occupation House once practiced) trying to sneak out on the sermon, it’s nearly impossible not to listen to this set clear through once it begins. It feels like an important bit of living history, and behind every tortured, exhausted note you can almost hear the ghost of Son House in his fiery prime. (Steve Leggett).

« Kokomo » was a popular brand of coffee early in the 20th century, and was the subject of Francis « Scrapper » Blackwell’s first recorded blues in 1928. When slide guitar specialist James Arnold revamped this number as « Old Original Kokomo Blues » for Decca in 1934, little did he know that this would soon become his permanent handle.Kokomo Arnold was born in Georgia, and began his musical career in Buffalo, New York in the early ’20s. During prohibition, Kokomo Arnold worked primarily as a bootlegger, and performing music was a only sideline to him. Nonetheless he worked out a distinctive style of bottleneck slide guitar and blues singing that set him apart from his contemporaries. In the late ’20s, Arnold settled for a short time in Mississippi, making his first recordings in May 1930 for Victor in Memphis under the name of « Gitfiddle Jim. » Arnold moved to Chicago in order to be near to where the action was as a bootlegger, but the repeal of the Volstead Act put him out of business, so he turned instead to music as a full-time vocation.

Big Joe Williams may have been the most cantankerous human being who ever walked the earth with guitar in hand. At the same time, he was an incredible blues musician: a gifted songwriter, a powerhouse vocalist, and an exceptionally idiosyncratic guitarist. Anyone who wants to learn Delta blues must one day come to grips with the idea that the guitar is a drum as well as a melody-producing instrument.Big Joe Williams, more than any other major recording artist, embodied the concept of guitar-as-drum, bashing out an incredible series of riffs on his G-tuned nine-string for over 60 years.

Ben & Ellen Harper – Childhood Home [2014]

Ben & Ellen Harper - Childhood Home [2014]

USA FlagRelease Date: May 6, 2014
Genre: Blues, Folk, Acoustic
Label: Prestige Folklore
USA

Landing the week before Mother’s Day, the ten songs on Childhood Home, six written by Ben and four written by Ellen, explore the intricacies of family life with honesty and generous intimacy. The album’s source can be directly traced to the pair’s highly unusual musical heritage. In 1958, Ben Harper’s maternal grandparents established The Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, California. It was there, amid guitars, banjos, tablas, ukuleles and all manner of instruments from around the world, that a distinctively musical family took shape. Ellen Harper, a talented multi-instrumentalist in her own right, … encouraged her family to use the store (which she still operates) as a musical laboratory. The center was a magnet for up-and-comers such as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal, who became extended family members, providing master classes in creativity and philosophy, all of which the young Ben Harper soaked up like a sponge.
