Tim Too Slim Langford is the founder, guitarist, singer, songwriter of Too Slim and the Taildraggers. Although generally lumped into the blues-rock arena, Tim « Too Slim » Langford and his band fall into whatever category a combination of Tom Petty, Creedence and ZZ Top would create. Perhaps swampy Americana is closer to the trio’s sound, especially on this terrific album. This album is several levels above that. Even with all the miles already on Slim’s life odometer, there is plenty of gas left in his tank. His journeyman experience makes these songs resonate more passionately than what’s on the surface and connect on a deeper level.

Line up:

Tim « Too Slim » Langford: lead vocals, guitar,
Tom Brimm: bass,
John Cage: drums,

Bob Dylan and the Band both needed the celebrated reunion tour of 1974, since Dylan’s fortunes had been floundering since Self Portrait and the Band stumbled with 1971’s Cahoots. The tour, with its attendant publicity, definitely returned both artists to center stage, and it definitely succeeded, breaking box office records and earning great reviews. Before the Flood, a double-album souvenir of the tour, suggests that these were generally dynamic shows, but not because they were reveling in the past, but because Dylan was fighting the nostalgia of his audience — nostalgia, it must be noted, that was promoted as the very reason behind these shows.Dylan reworks, rearranges, reinterprets these songs in ways that are still disarming, years after its initial release. He could only have performed interpretations this radical with a group as sympathetic, knowing of his traits as the band, whose own recordings here are respites from the storm. And this is a storm — the sound of a great rocker, surprising his band and audience by tearing through his greatest songs in a manner that might not be comforting, but it guarantees it to be one of the best live albums of its time.

Line up:

Bob Dylan : chant, guitares, harmonica, piano
The Band :
Rick Danko : chant, basse, violon
Levon Helm : chant, batterie, mandoline
Garth Hudson : orgue Hammond, clavinet, piano, claviers, saxophones

Ry Cooder – Paradise And Lunch (1974)

Ry Cooder - Paradise And Lunch (1974)

Ry Cooder understands that a great song is a great song, whether it was written before the Depression or last week. Still, at the same time he isn’t afraid to explore new avenues and possibilities for the material. Like his three previous records, Paradise and Lunch is filled with treasures which become part of a world where eras and styles converge without ever sounding forced or contrived. »Paradise And Lunch » showcases the diverse range of musical styles that distinguish Ry Cooder as one of the most versatileand eclectic artists in pop history. Vintage R&B selections mix with traditional blues, gospel and minstrel-era gems on an album that is both an homage to, and an innovative reworking of, American roots music. One may think that an album that contains a traditional railroad song, tunes by assorted blues greats, and a Negro spiritual alongside selections by the likes of Bobby Womack, Burt Bacharach, and Little Milton may lack cohesiveness or merely come across as a history lesson, but to Cooder this music is all part of the same fabric and is as relevant and accessible as anything else that may be happening at the time. No matter when it was written or how it may have been done in the past, the tracks, led by Cooder’s brilliant guitar, are taken to new territory where they can coexist.

Line up:

Ry Cooder: Guitar, vocals
Milt Holland : Drums, Percussion
Jim Keltner : Drums
Russ Titelman, Chris Etheridge : Electric Bass
Ronnie Barron : Piano, Organ

Super Session album for sale by Mike Bloomfield / Al Kooper / Mike Bloomfield / Stephen Stills was released Apr 08, 2003 on the Sony Music label. A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time–nobody makes records like this any more. Super Session is an album conceived by Al Kooper and featuring the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Bloomfield and Stills do not play together on the album, with tracks including Bloomfield on side one, and those including Stills on side two. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a gold record by the RIAA.

This album presents a variety of country blues and original tunes played solo as well as with friends. Some were recently recorded while others were released on projects that are no longer available but I thought fitted together nicely in the jigsaw pattern of my musical development. For years I toured with Duck Baker. It was always a joy playing with him. Just a Closer Walk, Blues For The Mann and Old Country Rock are duets. The combination of my country blues background and Duck’s jazz sensibilities makes playing together an adventure.

Landing the week before Mother’s Day, the ten songs on Childhood Home, six written by Ben and four written by Ellen, explore the intricacies of family life with honesty and generous intimacy. The album’s source can be directly traced to the pair’s highly unusual musical heritage. In 1958, Ben Harper’s maternal grandparents established The Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, California. It was there, amid guitars, banjos, tablas, ukuleles and all manner of instruments from around the world, that a distinctively musical family took shape. Ellen Harper, a talented multi-instrumentalist in her own right, … encouraged her family to use the store (which she still operates) as a musical laboratory. The center was a magnet for up-and-comers such as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal, who became extended family members, providing master classes in creativity and philosophy, all of which the young Ben Harper soaked up like a sponge.

Frankie Chavez – Frankie Chavez

Frankie Chavez – Frankie Chavez (2013)

Portugal_120-animated-flag-gifsGenre: Blues, Folk

Frankie Chavez is one of the most promising talents of the new Portuguese music; he has been referred to as the latest Blues revelation of southern Europe. His music combines a diverse array of sounds resulting in a Blues/Folk composed by clean sounds and others more raw and psychedelic.A multi-instrumentalist, Frankie Chavez uses several guitars, with different tunings, personalized drums and a wide number of effect pedals. When he overlaps different guitar layers with a loop station, he creates a rich and aggressive sonority, where nothing is left out of place. Through his warm tone and strikingly intimate lyrics he creates a deep closeness with the listeners.

Cam Penner – To Build a Fire

Original Release Date: April 1, 2013

Cam Penner’s fifth album is an extraordinary piece of work. Edgy, raw and thoroughly original, this is alt-folk with numerous unexpected twists and turns. The style book is continually ripped up as the album progresses. There’s some Woody Guthrie-style material some contemporary folk and even a touch of banjo-driven rap on Memphis. One things for sure – no two songs could be accused of being similar!

Guy Forsyth – The Freedom To Fail

Original Release Date:11/09/2012

Genre: Blues Rock/Folk
Label: Blue Corn Music

The Freedom to Fail marks an exploration into new territory for 20-year Austin veteran Guy Forsyth. Rather than focus his efforts solely on making an album that embodied the energy surrounding he and his band s dynamic live performances, Forsyth instead opted to create a work that doubled as a message to his young daughter, instilling upon her that she had to grow up feeling the freedom to fail. Produced by Matt Smith and recorded at the Lost Oasis Studio in Austin, Texas, The Freedom to Fail finds Forsyth handling a wide array of stringed instruments both contemporary and traditional, including the banjo, mandolin, baritone guitar, and harp guitar a 12-stringed instrument made popular at the turn of the 20th century. Forsyth’s diverse play gets a boost in the form of support players like local icon Jon Dee Graham, fellow Asylum Street Spankers alum John Doyle and multi-instrumentalist Sick, trumpeter Oliver Steck, and stalwart (and newly married) rhythm section of drummer Nina Singh-Botta and bassist Jeff Botta.
