Mick Taylor – Coastin Home (1995)

Release Date: November 3, 1995
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Classic Rock
Label: Shattered Music
USA

Originally issued in 1995 as Live at 14 Below: Coastin’ Home, the re-release features the same exact track listing but a different album cover. No matter. Taylor’s playing is still exceptional, especially on readings of the Stones’ « Can’t You Hear Me Knockin' » and Willie Dixon’s « You Shook Me » (both of which are ten-minute-plus jam fests). If you’ve lost track of Taylor since the early ’70s, 14 Below will prove that arguably the finest lead guitarist to pass through the Stones’ ranks has still got what it takes.

Line up:

Mick Taylor: Guitar, Vocals
Paul Ill: Bass
Ronnie Ciago: Drums
Bobby Owsinski: Guitar
Jeffrey Barr: Keyboards
Joe Houston: Saxophone

Genre: Blues, Classic Rock, Boogie Rock, Blues Rock
Label: Island Records/Lemon Rcds

Vinegar Joe might very easily have been Island Records’ answer to the Allman Bros. or Wet Willie. A sextet formed out of a busted big-band rock outfit called Dada, they were brought together at the suggestion of Island founder Chris Blackwell. The album was originally released in 1972 on Island Records. The CD booklet features sleeve notes and UK discography, including images of the three albums that the band released before their split in 1973. Their live shows were well reviewed and attracted significant audiences in England, but this was never reflected in their record sales.

Cactus (Carmine Appice, Tim Bogert, Jim McCarty and the late Rusty Day who died in 1982) were called « The American Led Zeppelin » in 1970. Now, four decades later, the band that made such an impression with their loud blues-edged hard rock madness…the band that influenced the likes of Van Halen, Joe Bonamassa, David Coverdale, and Kid Rock…the band that foreshadowed heavy music itself…are back. This time, they are providing the lusty macho soul. BLACK DAWN is the band’ newest studio album; a compelling step into the future upon a bridge firmly built in the past.

Savoy Brown, originally known as the Savoy Brown Blues Band, are a British blues band formed in 1965, in Battersea, South West London. The « Raw Sienna » a high-water mark by the band, finds them softening their rougher edges and stretching out into jazz territory, yet still retaining a blues foundation.Raw Sienna, issued in March of 1970, was the last album to feature the great Chris Youlden, a fine songwriter and stunning blues singer. Savoy Brown’s blues-rock sound takes on a much more defined feel on 1970’s Looking In and is one of this band’s best efforts. The entire album is saturated with a simple, British blues sound but the pace and the marbled strands of bubbly instrumental perkiness fill it with life.

So, here he is: Keith Richards, the man who was not supposed to make it to 40, now 71 and smiling on the cover of his third solo album, his first since 1992’s Main Offender. The old boy has plenty of reason to smile. Not only is he still around defying all expectations, but he has released a strong testament to his abilities and the music he loves.Keith returns to his roots on his third solo album. It’s some straight up rock and roll, a little reggae, Memphis soul, and a lot of blues, and folk music. GOODNIGHT IRENE almost sounds like Woody Guthrie. The arrangements are wonderful, and although his vocal style is ragged it’s always heart felt.Old Stones fans will love this album. No fake drums, synthesizers, gimmicks. It’s the real deal folks. Buy this album and make your kids listen to it.

Duane & Gregg Allman - Duane & Gregg Allman (1972-2014)

USA FlagYear Of Release: 1972/2014
Genre: Blues, Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Classic Rock
Label:Bold Records
USA18f7930fad60fbdb8a8200d3f35d8a3c

Duane & Greg Allman is the second studio album by the rock and roll band The 31st of February, recorded at TK Studios, Hialeah, Florida in September 1968. The planned album was never completed as the band broke up shortly afterwards, and the demo recordings remained unreleased until Bold Records released this album in May 1972. It was then attributed to Duane and Gregg Allman — and misspelling ‘Greg’ with one ‘g’ only — who in the mean time had established themselves in The Allman Brothers Band together with Butch Trucks, The 31st of February’s original drummer.

Line up:

Duane Allman – lead guitar
Gregg Allman – organ, lead vocals
Scott Boyer – acoustic guitar, vocals
David Brown – bass
Butch Trucks – drums, percussion

Label: Warner Bros.(8122797302)

This four disc box set remains an excellent overview of the band since around 1974, but fans of the earlier years featuring Bob Welch and Peter Green are likely to feel a little shortchanged with too much emphasis on the Buckingham/Nicks albums. One of the attractions of this box was the inclusion of some ‘alternate takes’. They are noted below in the track listing, although many of them are very similar to the originals, and non-fanatics might struggle to tell the difference.

Line up:

Mick Fleetwood
John McVie
Jeremy Spencer
Christine Mcvie
Stevie Nicks
Lindsey Buckingham
Peter Green
Rick Vito
Danny Kirwan
Bob Welch
Billy Burnette
Bob Weston
